FAQ

Common questions that are asked before starting Taekwondo.

What do I need to start?

Usually, nothing! Your local Dojang will likely offer a few free lessons for you to try out. A martial arts class is a very personal environment and even though you may love Taekwondo, a club might not be for you, so be sure to make use of the free trials on offer. Just be sure to wear comfortable, nonrestrictive clothes and bring a water bottle.

Once you are sure about your choice, you will most likely need to purchase your Dobok (uniform), and then ask your instructor about your options regarding protective gear.

Is it expensive to train Taekwondo?

Taekwondo, compared to other martial arts, can actually be on the cheaper side of things when it comes to fees! Ask your instructor about the payment plans on offer. However, be prepared for the initial expense of protective gear, as that can get expensive. Often, Dojangs will have their own equipment for sale, but if not, do your research and ask your instructor to help make an informed choice.

I hate violence and don't enjoy getting hurt. Can I still train?

No problem. In fact, this is a good mindset to have! Taekwondo, or martial arts in general, is not just about learning how to hurt your opponent. Martial arts is about improving ones mind and body, and instilling values such as respect, confidence and hard work. Many people actually learn to control their anger and other negative emotion through martial arts, and if your ask a seasoned martial arts veteran what they would do in a street fight, many would simply say run first! It is not worth risking serious injury just to prove something.

That being said, feel free to opt out of sparring if it isn't for you. Your teacher should fully understand, and could eventually ease you into it once you get more comfortable. And while most Dojangs have a warm and friendly environment, it's a good idea to bring a friend if you are feeling nervous.

However! No pain no gain! Don't be afraid of pushing yourself to be a better you! You will experience muscle pain (DOMS), but don't worry, you will soon get used to and maybe even enjoy that feeling, as it is a reminder of your hard work and dedication!
